Destructive and Venomous Snakes in Bali a Security Guide

There are six different types of peril/venomous snakes in Bali and many other non-venomous species that live on this popular tourist island of Indonesia.

However, snake worries don’t have to ruin your Bali vacation. Snakes are rarely a problem in tourist areas of the island, and they are usually reluctant to bite unless they are caught or trampled. In fact, they usually try to avoid people completely.

My wife and I have been living in Bali for years, traveling all over the island (including many non-tourist areas), and we have only met one or two snakes during this time. The photos in this guide were taken in Bali with the help of a professional snake catcher.

Even though most tourists and short-term visitors to Bali probably won’t see a snake, it’s still a good idea to learn about harmful species and what to do if you ever come across one.

In this guide you will learn how to identify peril snakes in Bali, what to do if you find a snake in your resort (or in rice fields), who to contact for snake removal and what to do if you are bitten by a snake in Bali.

How to Avoid Bali Snakes

First of all, here are some tips that will help you avoid snakes in Bali and protect yourself from them:

Respect all snakes in Bali and treat them as harmful. Leave her alone and do not touch her.

Do not try to catch or finish snakes. Ask for help from a professional. I made some contacts for snake catchers after in this article.

Wear a bright light to see where you are going at night. You don’t want to step on a snake in the dark.

If you are hiking or wandering through the foliage, walk slowly and make yourself heard. Most Bali snakes will run away when they hear a person coming.

Ideally, wear long pants and closed shoes when hiking in the jungle. Most of the snake bites are on the extremities.

For identification, take photos of the snake from a distance of at least 2 meters.

Closed bathrooms in Bali are safer than open bathrooms if you really want to avoid snakes and other intruders.

6 Peril / harmful Snakes Of Bali

* Insular pit viper (Trimeresurus Insularis)

The island pit viper is one of the most frequently seen venomous snakes in Bali and has caused a good part of the bites and passed away in Bali and Java. It is found in all rural areas of Bali.

This snake has a triangular head and a light green body with a reddish-brown tail. The easiest way to identify it is the color of the tail and the shape of the head, which distinguishes it from similar-looking non-harmful green snakes.

It is a very beautiful snake species, and other beautiful colors such as bright turquoise or banana yellow can be seen in places like the Komodo Islands in Indonesia.

The green color of this snake in Bali makes it difficult to see it in the foliage and trees of the jungle, where it usually hides during the day, before going to the ground at dusk to hunt.

I almost stepped on an island pit viper once when I hiked to the island of Nusa Penida, in a less busy part of the island with a lot of foliage (it was not in a popular tourist area).
